Wu Yifan and Lu Han removed from CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala

After much hype and anticipation, it was announced via Sina today that former SM Entertainment artists and former bandmates Wu Yifan and Lu Han will not be making their first post-SM television performance together.

The two singer-actors had previously been confirmed to film a segment for CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala with actor William Chan and competitive diver Ning Zetao. The segment was to highlight their positions as young rising celebrities in China.

As for possible reasons as to why this segment has been cut out from CCTV’s show, the media was given the reason that show organizers had over-scheduled the allotted time for that broadcast hour. CCTV planners were given the option to cut out one of two possible sections from the overall show. Unfortunately for Wu Yifan and Lu Han fans, show organizers decided to choose their segment.

There has also been speculation that the decision was influenced by the recent lawsuits filed by SM Entertainment against Lu Han. Due to the sensitivity of the lawsuits, it’s believed the CCTV event organizers were skewed towards editing out Wu Yifan’s and Lu Han’s performance.

On February 5 and February 10, Korean entertainment agency SM Entertainment announced that they have filed lawsuits via the Shanghai and Hong Kong courts against Lu Han’s recent promotional activities. In SM’s statements, they claim the artist’s activities are of a breach of contract and an infringement of the company’s legal rights.

According to Sina, the CCTV program organizers experienced difficulties in providing an efficient amount of time for Wu Yifan’s and Lu Han’s program. Their segment was expected to air during 11:00 PM and 12:00 AM, which is considered primetime on CCTV’s annual Spring Festival Gala show.

Segment planners made many suggestions to ensure the highest quality for the performance, and they championed for the segment at their utmost ability. Due to the meticulous scheduling of the primetime broadcast hour, the segment planners were unsuccessful in keeping the segment on-air.

Although being cut from one of the most watched TV shows in China will be a huge disappointment to Wu Yifan’s and Lu Han’s celebrity status, it has not been all bad news for at least one of the former EXO members.

It was announced today that Wu Yifan has been confirmed to act alongside actress Liu Yifei on the film adaptation of the novel You’re Still Here (tentative title) (原來你還在這裡). The romantic drama will have the same name as the novel, and it will depict the story of two high school sweethearts who reconnect after a four-year separation. Filming is expected to begin in either March or April, with Liu Yifei and Wu Yifan playing characters called Su Yunjin and Cheng Zhang respectively.

Wu Yifan can currently be seen in Somewhere Only You Know, which premiered on February 14 on a limited run across North American cinemas.
